Freemasonry is a world-wide secular or non-religious fraternal association, which evolved in the early modern period of the 1600s. It developed and expanded in the 1700s, where it became the foremost society in many cities, towns, and villages. While its true origins are debated, most scholars agree that it was started in these islands, with Scotland having the earliest documentary evidence to support its claim as the home of The Craft.
The first governing body, or Grand Lodge of Freemasons, was established in London in 1717; this was followed by Ireland where the Grand Lodge of Ireland (Dublin) and the Grand Lodge of Munster (Cork) were both in existence by 1725 (united in 1730), while the Grand Lodge of Scotland came about in 1736.
This book celebrates the 300 anniversary of the Grand Lodge of Ireland (1725) as seen through the rich material culture from its heritage collections of archival material, rare books, paintings and regalia.
