The Metropolitan Grand Lodge (MetGL) was established on October 1, 2003, as an independent administrative body led by a Metropolitan Grand Master. Its purpose is to support Freemasonry within London, much like Provincial Grand Lodges do for other areas in England and Wales. The MetGL oversees over 1,200 Lodges and nearly 30,000 members. Its offices are located at Freemasons' Hall on Great Queen Street in London, which also houses the United Grand Lodge of England.
