Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No. 21: The Dream of Poliphilus

The Dream of Poliphilus, also known as the Hypnerotomachia or 'Strife of Love in a Dream', is an elaborate allegory written in the mid-15th century by Francesco Colonna, who is believed to have been a monk. The allegory takes the form of a dream journey undertaken by Poliphilus in his quest for his spiritual love, Polia. 

The narrative is highly intricate, featuring detailed descriptions of symbols and architectural elements, yet its underlying structure is straightforward, showcasing the transformation of the main character. This work was clearly penned by someone skilled in emblematic symbolism and had a profound influence on the later emblem tradition. 

The book is illustrated with many famous woodcuts and gained considerable popularity, rivalling that of Boccaccio's Decameron. The Dream of Poliphilus can be seen as an archetype for later allegorical writings, particularly the 'Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz' , with which it shares some similarities. In 1600, Beroalde de Verville wrote an alchemical commentary on this work in his Le Tableau des riches inventions.
